I've been less than impressed with Stellar Transformations, but Legend of Mecha Scholar coming out in 2024-5 looks promising.

from my understanding he can fight people a few levels above him on equal footing due to the heavenly flame and with the secret fire skill that boosts his power even more those that are more powerful for a period of time. His lightening movement skill gives him a bit of a buffer as they are not able to catch him so easily. Also, its been shown time and again in several donghua's that those who gained their power by swallowing pill's are nothing compared to those that worked their asses off to earn it so it wouldnt surprise me if thats how yun shan earned his dou zong in the end.

Two people at the same level can vary vastly. When one has gone through several body strengthening techniques and we also know that Yun Shan ascended with the help of Hall of souls. So probably he is not as strong as someone else if we compare with the other elders that were superficially dou Huang.

There's also different grades to technique. His gates one he got from Xun er that he used when Yun Shan big sword technique, is high tier like his flame transformation one. Yao Chen vs Soul Hall Lackey and Xiao Yan vs Yun Shan, both fights are Dou Zong level.

Difference is
Yao Chen and SH Lackey are from Central Continent where they have all the resources, skills and knowledge to minimum optimize Dou Sheng Pinnacle to the extreme. So this fight is a battle between 2 fighters who knows how to fully optimize Dou Zong power levels.

Xiao Yan vs Yun Shan's battle is 2 fighters who doesn't know how to fight effectively with Dou Zong's power. Xiao Yan himself, is not even a Dou Zong, but 2 Stages below a Dou King. (One that's way beyond optimized, an anomaly among Dou Kings) While Yun Shan is akin to a country bumpkin who got lucky and managed to reach Dou Zong power levels.

This is why you can see significant difference in their strength. Yao Chen is fighting on fumes, he's just a soul right now and cannot fight at actual Dou Zun level. (Or else there's a high chance he'll accidentally touch the Dou Zong lackey and cause the scrub to explode so hard, he resurrect from death via explosion and then explode again)

The same way Yao Lao and Xiao Yan's aura during the fight causes superficial damage, expected the field of floating islands to be destroyed if not constantly breaking. But just being nit-picky was still a great episode.

Yao Chen is not fighting at Dou Zun level. He is currently at Dou Zong level of fighting power because he is in a Spirit State, a less weakened Spirit State.
